the hottest summer, salty crepe & green bean slushies

Here’s the live reporting straight from Beijing! I’m currently doing summer school in Peking University with students from different universities around the world. This summer is the hottest one that I’ve ever had and when I walk under the sun I feel like either I’m on fire/sweating so much that I’m almost melted. So my life savers here are bottles and bottles of iced water, ice lolly and also SALTY CREPES.

The video was recorded after we woke the stall keeper up so she could make us this yummy chinese salty crepe. Seriously, food cannot be any cheaper here in China. We got the crepe for 4 RMB (0.5 CAD) and food at the school canteens costs around 5 RMB (not even 1 CAD) per meal. In terms of quality, food like chinese buns, dumplings from the canteen are acceptable and they are actually not too bad. What more can you ask for from a meal that’s so cheap? (Ashy’s advice on having a dirty cheap set lunch at Peking U: 12 dumplings + 1 drink = 5.6 RMB = a bit less than 1 CAD) Having a cup of green bean slushies is also recommended, but please wait for about 30 minutes after your lunch so you won’t get into a food coma.

The huge salty crepe. *gulp*

So satisfied.

Haw flavored ice lolly – new found love in Beijing! They have real haw bits in it and it tastes everything like the real haw. NOM. (by the way, the guy beside me is Alex S, who took the awesome crepe video!)

I’m not going to say much about the crepe (my “Aiyooooo” and “Oh.My.God. It looks SO GOOD” in the video explains enough)….. but that brown, caramelised sauce is the soul. Video credits to Alex A. & Alex S. (there are just too many Alex in our summer program), my new foodie buddies! Stay tuned for more updates on Beijing/Seoul!

p.s. just a side note, the “Hi, this is Ashley” in the video…. that’s my I’m-a-food-commenter voice.
